One of my boy hood dreams
has been to own a good mining cruiser. Many people miss the point
entirely and go for the one with the most turrets. Then they realise
it has a nasty cargo space and they have to stack the ore in space
only to come back later with an industrial ship. This has many bad
points as other people will just help themselves like they did with
me once. After much reading I found one with a good cargo space
(the largest of all cruisers) and a decent drone space for heavy
defence drones. The Vexor!
And another bonus is
that I have already studied the books on how to operate this level
of Gallente cruiser so it was a just a matter of getting the money.
Once I had the cash I found a nice cheap one for sale in the same
system as me. Just as things start to look up for me, I wander over
to the next station (only 250,000km away, what luck) and board my
new ship. Like a giddy kid at Christmas I requested to undock and
off I went.
Then the nightmare started.
Yes, the ship was everything I had dreamed about, but it had a dream
of it's own
. To fly me directly to the centre of Pator's sun!
As soon as I set the course for my home station right next door
the ship generated a low energy warp field and pointed to the sun.
Lucky for me that the field was not strong enough to go faster than
about 4000m/s, but I would hit the sun in less than 10 minutes.
Frantically I climbed
out of the pod and made my way to the override button that would
dump the warp energy out in a blast around my ship. I may take damage
but it's better than being cooked alive. However, the button was
stuck and despite kicking it hard enough to crack the console around
it, it would not budge.
Then, the red light came
on above the console and a strange soft male voice spoke to me.
"Dave, what are you doing?"
I was puzzled as the ship had no such voice interface.
"You are trying to stop me Dave." The voice continued
"I cannot allow you to do this"
Again I was shocked. Especially as my name is not Dave!?
"My name is Darius, wh
who are you?" I replied, ever
aware that the burning ball of light, generally known as the sun
was growing ever closer!
Then the voice spoke "Oops, wrong game!" ?????
Then the light faded
and the button clicked. I pressed it as hard as I could and the
ship stopped with a bang as the plasma energy discharged like a
smart bomb with enough time to move the ship before the sun melted
the armour!
As I docked I could not
help but wonder what the voice was, what it was trying to do, should
I have trusted it?
But more importantly
.
Who the bloody hell is this Dave?
